Don’t let the wool get pulled over your eyes – Chesterfield is a great office location

Chesterfield, right in the middle of England, gets its name quite literally from the Roman Fort which was established there in 70AD.  The Roman name for a fort was ‘Caester’ and the area designated to grazing cattle was a ‘feld’, hence ‘Caester Feld’, or as the modern English interpretation sees it – Chesterfield.

Although the Roman Fort was abandoned soon after when the Romans moved on in the second century, the location was obviously a good place to establish a settlement, as several centuries later a village grew on the site.

In the late 12th and early 13th century things moved on relatively quickly for Chesterfield.  Firstly it grew from a village into a town, gained its own market, had a yearly fair where people would come from all over Derbyshire and South Yorkshire to visit, and the town was given a charter, which entitled the townsfolk to several important rights.

By the Middle Ages Chesterfield was a major commercial centre for both wool and leather products, both of these adding up to the majority of the town’s trade.  By the 18th century the wool industry declined and was replaced by brewing as the other major manufacturing product to come out of the town, along with the leather which continued its dominance.

One of the features which makes Chesterfield such a pleasant town, still to this day, is the fact that, despite George Stephenson the inventor of ‘The Rocket’ (a famous steam locomotive), having both lived in the town and laid to rest there, the industrial revolution very much passed Chesterfield by and the town continued to grow steadily at its own pace.

Such was Chesterfield’s appeal as a quaint market town that Daniel Defoe, author of ‘Robinson Crusoe’ and other great books, when he visited the town in the 18th century, described Chesterfield as ‘a handsome, populous town, well built and well inhabited’.  Despite a heavy coal mining industry having taken place in the region up until the late 20th century, little of its influence remains imprinted upon on Chesterfield.

So what about Chesterfield in the 21st Century?  Well, its location is still the same obviously, so it benefits from being in the middle of the country, which makes access to other areas such as nearby Derby, The Midlands, South Yorkshire and the South of England exceptionally easy (Chesterfield is only 6 miles from the M1).

Such is Chesterfield’s excellent proximity to both the East Midlands and Sheffield in particular, that Forsyth chose to locate one of their Business Centres there.  Below I have gone into a little more detail about the business centre itself;
